Medical Study: Over One-Third of Men with Type 2 Diabetes Achieve Remission After Testosterone Therapy

Updated on:

An 11-year medical study of more than 350 men with type 2 diabetes found over one-third of the patients in the study acheived remission of diabetes after getting testosterone replacement therapy.

The medical study was performed by a medical researcher from the University of Buffalo, and the findings are said to be a “game changer” for men with Type 2 diabetes according to a press release published by UB.

The results showed that the men treated with testosterone had “significant progressive and sustained reductions in their body weight, fasting glucose, HbA1c and fasting insulin over the treatment period,” the authors wrote. In the control group, fasting glucose, HbA1c and fasting insulin increased.

One-third (34.3%) of men treated with testosterone saw remission of their diabetes; almost half (46.6%) achieved normal glucose regulation with antidiabetic treatment and a vast majority (83.1%) reached their target level of HbA1c (the average amount of glucose in blood over a six- or 12-week period).

The study concluded that men with type 2 diabetes benefit from long term testosterone replacement therapy, which improves glycemic control and insulin resistance:

Long‐term TTh in men with T2DM and hypogonadism improves glycaemic control and insulin resistance. Remission of diabetes occurred in one‐third of the patients. TTh is potentially a novel additional therapy for men with T2DM and hypogonadism.

Benefits of Testosterone Replacement

Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) provides patients suffering from a low testosterone diagnosis with a safe and medically supervised way of optimizing your testosterone levels. After a patient gets tested with a complete hormonal blood panel, the patient will be prescribed a medical protocol which may include a combination of testosterone, estrogen blockers, supplements, and nutritional guidelines. The specific type of testosterone prescribed may depend on the individual needs of the patient.
