Medical Study: Estrogen Treatments Help Post-Menopausal Women Improve Diabetes

Updated on:

Medical researchers may have found a way to help post-menopausal women experiencing type 2 diabetes, as some women participating in a study have shown improvements after being given hormone replacement therapy with estrogen.

As women age, they may begin to experience hormonal deficiencies, which may contribute to an increase in visceral fat around the midsection and a decrease in muscle mass. Estrogen treatments as part of a bio-identical hormone replacement therapy may help women increase muscle mass, improve their skin health, increase their libido, among other benefits, and now doctors are seeing a link between improvement of glucose homeostasis.

Franck Mauvais-Jarvis, MD., director of the Tulane Diabetes Research Program at Tulane University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans, explained at the Annual World Congress on Insulin Resistance, Diabetes & Cardiovascular Disease: “During the menopause transition, women accumulate metabolic disturbances, including visceral obesity, systemic inflammation, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. They also lose muscle mass. Some of these abnormalities are partially explained by chronological aging, but they are also caused by estrogen deficiency. There’s a synergism between aging and estrogen deficiency.”
